ABOUT FARMINGTON, CT:
At 750 feet tall, Rattlesnake Mountain, in Farmington, Connecticut, overlooks the Farmington Valley, a picturesque swath of country towns about eight miles west of Hartford. The Farmington River flows through the valley, offering ample opportunities for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and tubing; it is also a nesting site for bald eagles. Two recreational paths, the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail and the Farmington River Trail, built on former railroad beds, are popular for cycling and ambling past farms, historic landmarks, and the riverfront. Located halfway between New York City and Boston, Farmington is home to a picturesque Main Street lined with historic structures and the bucolic Hill-Stead Museum, one of the state’s most photogenic art institutions. Set on a 152-acre estate, the museum’s centerpiece is a Colonial Revival mansion designed by Theodate Pope Riddle, one of the country’s first licensed female architects. Its collection of Impressionist and decorative art includes works by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Mary Cassatt. Farmington is also a healthcare hub. UCONN Health, a public academic medical center on a 211-acre campus, employs 5,300 full-time workers, making it one of the area’s largest employers. The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, a 183,500-square-foot research facility on UCONN’s campus, employs more than 300 biomedical researchers, technicians and support staff.
